Leave a Lasting Legacy

Looking for a great way to recognize the accomplishments of a Scout or Scouter in your unit or district? Would you like to promote future excellence in Scouting? A James E. West Fellowship Award through the Laurel Highlands Council is an excellent way to accomplish both of those goals. By making a significant contribution to the council's endowment program , you can honor a worthy individual and leave a lasting legacy to promote Scouting into its second century.

We all know youth and adults who deserve to be honored and who might not otherwise have the chance to have a positive financial impact on the future of Scouting. This may be that opportunity.

Background and Significance

Looking for a great way to recognize the accomplishments of a Scout or Scouter in your unit or district? Would you like to promote future excellence in Scouting? A James E. West Fellowship Award through the Laurl Highlands Council is an excellent way to accomplish both of those goals. By making a significant contribution to the council's endowment program , you can honor a worthy individual and leave a lasting legacy to promote Scouting into its second century. We all know youth and adults who deserve to be honored and who might not otherwise have the chance to have a positive financial impact on the future of Scouting. This may be that opportunity The award is named after the first Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America who exemplified Ralph Waldo Emerson's observation that "an institution is the lengthened shadow of one man." Scouting today is the "lengthened shadow" of more than three decades of the visionary and dedicated leadership of Dr. James E. West.

Those who are recognized by the James E. West Fellowship Award will cast their own "lengthened shadow" as they help ensure the Scouting legacy for future generations of young people.

The Award

The James E. West Fellowship Award is a national recognition for individuals who contribute $1,000 or more in cash or marketable securities to our council endowment trust fund. This contribution is intended to be in addition to—and does not diminish or replace—a gift to the annual Friends of Scouting campaign.

Gifts are safely invested in the council’s permanent endowment trust fund. Only the interest earned from that investment will be used for current programs. The principal amount is never expended, so your donation will last forever and continue to support Scouting in perpetuity beyond your lifetime.

Who should receive a Fellowship?

Organizations or individuals may contribute an award in their own name or to honor someone. Honorees have included:

  • Silver Beaver Award recipients
  • Council board members
  • Eagle Scouts

Recognition

Each James E. West Fellow is recognized with a personalized certificate, a lapel pin and the James E. West square knot to wear on the official Boy Scouts of America uniform. While it is a national recognition, the James E. West Fellowship Award is authorized and presented by the local council.
