Potomac Merger

 LHC Potomac

December 10, 2013

To all Council members and leaders:

I’m sure by now you have heard the exciting news that the Potomac and Laurel Highlands Councils are soon to vote on a merger of the two entities.  The discussions leading to this action have been ongoing informally for nearly a year, with formal discussions and plans being developed over the last several months.  It is our expectation that a final council vote will occur in both our councils by December 19th, with our operations being combined effective January 1, 2014.

The Laurel Highlands Council, headquartered in Pittsburgh, once combined with the Potomac Council will encompass 16 counties in three states and serve nearly 30,000 youth.  With over 30 professionals and 15 support staff working in the organization, it is certainly our goal to improve programming throughout this region, and to revitalize Scouting in our area.

As with any major change like this, there are bound to be questions.  Some of your questions can be answered now – others will need to be held until the operating committees of the combined council begin the formal work of digesting the new operation.   We can assure you, however, that this change is nothing but a positive move to enhance Scouting in western Pennsylvania, Western Maryland and Eastern West Virginia.

To help you understand the coming changes, we’ve prepared a Frequently Asked Questions paper that hopefully addresses most of your thoughts.  As always, we invite any comments or suggestions not only before the formal consolidation, but into the future as well.  Our program only works with engaged volunteers and we encourage you get even more involved in this exciting time!
